  9. Introduction
  10. ------------
  11. aria2 is a utility for downloading files. The supported protocols are
  12. HTTP(S), FTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink. aria2 can download a file from
  13. multiple sources/protocols and tries to utilize your maximum download
  14. bandwidth. It supports downloading a file from HTTP(S)/FTP and
  15. BitTorrent at the same time, while the data downloaded from
  16. HTTP(S)/FTP is uploaded to the BitTorrent swarm. Using Metalink's
  17. chunk checksums, aria2 automatically validates chunks of data while
  18. downloading a file like BitTorrent.
  19. Here is a list of features.
  20. * Command-line interface
  21. * Download files through HTTP(S)/FTP/BitTorrent
  22. * Segmented downloading
  23. * Metalink version 3.0 support(HTTP/FTP/BitTorrent)
  24. * HTTP/1.1 implementation
  25. * HTTP Proxy support
  26. * HTTP BASIC authentication support
  27. * HTTP Proxy authentication support
  28. * Well-known environment variables for proxy: http_proxy, https_proxy,
  29. ftp_proxy, all_proxy and no_proxy
  30. * HTTP gzip, deflate content encoding support
  31. * Verify peer using given trusted CA certificate in HTTPS
  32. * Client certificate authentication in HTTPS
  33. * Chunked transfer encoding support
  34. * Load Cookies from file using the Firefox3 format and the Mozilla/Firefox
  35. (1.x/2.x)/Netscape format.
  36. * Save Cookies in the Mozilla/Firefox (1.x/2.x)/Netscape format.
  37. * Custom HTTP Header support
  38. * Persistent Connections support
  39. * FTP through HTTP Proxy
  40. * Download/Upload speed throttling
  41. * BitTorrent extensions: Fast extension, DHT, PEX, MSE/PSE, Multi-Tracker
  42. * BitTorrent http://getright.com/seedtorrent.html[WEB-Seeding]. aria2
  43. requests chunks more than piece size to reduce the request
  44. overhead. It also supports pipelined requests with piece size.
  45. * Rename/change the directory structure of BitTorrent downloads
  46. completely
  47. * XML-RPC interface
  48. * Run as a daemon process
  49. * Selective download in multi-file torrent/Metalink
  50. * Chunk checksum validation in Metalink
  51. * Can disable segmented downloading in Metalink
  52. * Netrc support
  53. * Configuration file support
  54. * Download URIs found in a text file or stdin and the destination directory and
  55. output filename can be specified optionally
  56. * Parameterized URI support
  57. Dependency
  58. ----------
  59. .External Library Dependency
  60. [options="header"]
  61. |=================================================
  62. |features |dependency
  63. |HTTPS |GnuTLS or OpenSSL
  64. |BitTorrent |GnuTLS+Libgcrypt or OpenSSL
  65. |Metalink |libxml2 or Expat.
  66. |Checksum |GnuTLS+Libgcrypt or OpenSSL
  67. |gzip, deflate in HTTP|zlib
  68. |Async DNS |C-Ares
  69. |Firefox3 cookie |libsqlite3
  70. |XML-RPC |libxml2 or Expat.
  71. |=================================================
  72. Note;;
  73. GNU TLS has precedence over OpenSSL if both libraries are installed.
  74. If you prefer OpenSSL, run configure with \--without-gnutls.
  75. Note;;
  76. libxml2 has precedence over Expat if both libraries are installed.
  77. If you prefer Expat, run configure with \--without-libxml2.
  78. You can disable BitTorrent, Metalink support by providing
  79. \--disable-bittorrent, \--disable-metalink respectively to configure
  80. script.
  81. In order to enable async DNS support, you need c-ares.
  82. * c-ares: http://daniel.haxx.se/projects/c-ares/
  83. How to build
  84. ------------
  85. In order to build aria2 from the source package, you need following
  86. development packages(package name may vary depending on the
  87. distribution you use):
  88. * libgnutls-dev (Required for HTTPS, BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  89. * libgpg-error-dev (Required for BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  90. * libgcrypt-dev (Required for BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  91. * libc-ares-dev (Required for async DNS support)
  92. * libxml2-dev (Required for Metalink support)
  93. * zlib1g-dev (Required for gzip, deflate decoding support in HTTP)
  94. * libsqlite3-dev (Required for Firefox3 cookie support)
  95. You can use libssl-dev instead of
  96. libgnutls-dev,libgpg-error-dev,libgcrypt-dev:
  97. * libssl-dev (Required for HTTPS, BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  98. You can use libexpat1-dev instead of libxml2-dev:
  99. * libexpat1-dev (Required for Metalink support)
  100. You may also need pkg-config to detect the above mentioned libraries.
  101. The quickest way to build aria2 is just type following commands:
  102. -------------
  103. $ ./configure
  104. $ make
  105. -------------
  106. The configure script checks available libraries and enables the features
  107. as much as possible because all the features are enabled by default.
  108. Since 1.1.0, aria2 checks the certificate of HTTPS servers by default.
  109. If you build with HTTPS support, I recommend to supply the path to the
  110. CA bundle file. For example, in Debian the path to CA bundle file is
  111. '/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt' (in ca-certificates package). This
  112. may vary depending on your distribution. You can give it to
  113. configure script using \--with-ca-bundle option:
  114. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  115. $ ./configure --with-ca-bundle='/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt'
  116. $ make
  117. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  118. Without \--with-ca-bundle option, you will encounter the error when
  119. accessing HTTPS servers because the certificate cannot be verified
  120. without CA bundle. In such case, you can specify the CA bundle file
  121. using aria2's \--ca-certificate option. If you don't have CA bundle
  122. file installed, then the last resort is disable the certificate
  123. validation using \--check-certificate=false.
  124. The executable is 'aria2c' in src directory.
  125. aria2 uses CppUnit for automated unit testing. To run the unit test:
  126. ------------
  127. $ make check
  128. ------------
  129. BitTorrrent
  130. -----------
  131. About filename
  132. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  133. The filename of the downloaded file is determined as follows:
  134. single-file mode::
  135. If "name" key is present in .torrent file, filename is the value
  136. of "name" key. Otherwise, filename is the basename of .torrent
  137. file appended by ".file". For example, .torrent file is
  138. "test.torrrent", then filename is "test.torrent.file". The
  139. directory to store the downloaded file can be specified by -d
  140. option.
  141. multi-file mode::
  142. The complete directory/file structure mentioned in .torrent file
  143. is created. The directory to store the top directory of
  144. downloaded files can be specified by -d option.
  145. Before download starts, a complete directory structure is created if
  146. needed. By default, aria2 opens at most 100 files mentioned in
  147. .torrent file, and directly writes to and reads from these files.
  148. The number of files to open simultaneously can be controlled by
  149. \--bt-max-open-files option.
  150. DHT
  151. ~~~
  152. As of release 0.13.0, aria2 supports DHT. By default, the routing
  153. table is saved to $HOME/.aria2/dht.dat.
  154. Other things should be noted
  155. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  156. * -o option is used to change the filename of .torrent file itself,
  157. not a filename of a file in .torrent file. For this purpose, use
  158. --index-out option instead.
  159. * The port numbers that aria2 uses by default are 6881-6999 for TCP
  160. and UDP.
  161. * aria2 doesn't configure port-forwarding automatically. Please
  162. configure your router or firewall manually.
  163. * The maximum number of peers is 55. This limit may be exceeded when
  164. download rate is low. This download rate can be adjusted using
  165. \--bt-request-peer-speed-limit option.
  166. * As of release 0.10.0, aria2 stops sending request message after
  167. selective download completes.
  168. Metalink
  169. --------
  170. The current implementation supports HTTP(S)/FTP/BitTorrent. The other
  171. P2P protocols are ignored.
  172. For checksum verification, MD5, SHA1, and SHA256 are supported. If
  173. multiple hash algorithms are provided, aria2 uses SHA1. If whole file
  174. checksum verification fails, aria2 doesn't retry the download and just
  175. exits with non-zero return code.
  176. The supported user preferences are version, language, location,
  177. protocol and os.
  178. If chunk checksums are provided in Metalink file, aria2 automatically
  179. validates chunks of data during download. This behavior can be turned
  180. off by a command-line option.
  181. If signature is included in a Metalink file, aria2 saves it as a file
  182. after the completion of the download. The filename is download
  183. filename + ".sig". If same file already exists, the signature file is
  184. not saved.
  185. netrc
  186. -----
  187. netrc support is enabled by default for HTTP(S)/FTP. To disable netrc
  188. support, specify -n command-line option. Your .netrc file should have
  189. correct permissions(600).
