  10. ------------
  11. aria2 is a utility for downloading files. The supported protocols are
  12. HTTP(S), FTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink. aria2 can download a file from
  13. multiple sources/protocols and tries to utilize your maximum download
  14. bandwidth. It supports downloading a file from HTTP(S)/FTP and
  15. BitTorrent at the same time, while the data downloaded from
  16. HTTP(S)/FTP is uploaded to the BitTorrent swarm. Using Metalink's
  17. chunk checksums, aria2 automatically validates chunks of data while
  18. downloading a file like BitTorrent.

  116. ------------
  117. In order to build aria2 from the source package, you need following
  118. development packages(package name may vary depending on the
  119. distribution you use):
  120. * libgnutls-dev (Required for HTTPS, BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  121. * nettle-dev (Required for BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  122. * libgmp-dev (Required for BitTorrent)
  123. * libc-ares-dev (Required for async DNS support)
  124. * libxml2-dev (Required for Metalink support)
  125. * zlib1g-dev (Required for gzip, deflate decoding support in HTTP)
  126. * libsqlite3-dev (Required for Firefox3/Chromium cookie support)
  127. You can use libgcrypt-dev instead of nettle-dev and libgmp-dev:
  128. * libgpg-error-dev (Required for BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  129. * libgcrypt-dev (Required for BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  130. You can use libssl-dev instead of

  136. On Fedora you need the following packages: gcc, gcc-c++, kernel-devel,

  138. If you downloaded source code from git repository, you have to run
  139. following command to generate configure script and other files
  140. necessary to build the program::
  141. $ autoreconf -i
  142. Also you need `Sphinx <http://sphinx.pocoo.org/>`_ to build man page.
  143. If you are building aria2 for Mac OS X, take a look at
  144. build_osx_release.sh, which builds OSX universal binary DMG.
  145. The quickest way to build aria2 is first run configure script::
  146. $ ./configure
  147. To build statically linked aria2, use ``ARIA2_STATIC=yes``
  148. command-line option::
  149. $ ./configure ARIA2_STATIC=yes
  150. After configuration is done, run ``make`` to compile the program::
  151. $ make
  152. See `Cross-compiling Windows binary`_ to create Windows binary. See
  153. `Cross-compiling Android binary`_ to create Android binary.
  154. The configure script checks available libraries and enables the features
  155. as much as possible because all the features are enabled by default.
  156. Since 1.1.0, aria2 checks the certificate of HTTPS servers by default.
  157. If you build with OpenSSL or the recent version of GnuTLS which has
  158. ``gnutls_certificate_set_x509_system_trust()`` function and the
  159. library is properly configured to locate the system-wide CA
  160. certificates store, aria2 will automatically load those certificates
  161. at the startup. If it is not the case, I recommend to supply the path
  162. to the CA bundle file. For example, in Debian the path to CA bundle
  163. file is '/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt' (in ca-certificates
  164. package). This may vary depending on your distribution. You can give
  165. it to configure script using ``--with-ca-bundle option``::
  166. $ ./configure --with-ca-bundle='/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt'
  167. $ make
  168. Without ``--with-ca-bundle`` option, you will encounter the error when
  169. accessing HTTPS servers because the certificate cannot be verified
  170. without CA bundle. In such case, you can specify the CA bundle file
  171. using aria2's ``--ca-certificate`` option. If you don't have CA bundle
  172. file installed, then the last resort is disable the certificate
  173. validation using ``--check-certificate=false``.
  174. By default, bash_completion file named ``aria2c`` is installed to the
  175. directory ``$prefix/share/doc/aria2/bash_completion``. To change the
  176. install directory of the file, use ``--with-bashcompletiondir``
  177. option.
  178. The executable is 'aria2c' in src directory.
  179. aria2 uses CppUnit for automated unit testing. To run the unit test::
  180. $ make check
  181. Cross-compiling Windows binary
  182. ------------------------------
  183. In this section, we describe how to build Windows binary using
  184. mingw-w64 cross-compiler on Debian Linux.
  185. Basically, after compiling and installing depended libraries, you can
  186. do cross-compile just passing appropriate ``--host`` option and
  187. specifying ``CPPFLAGS``, ``LDFLAGS`` and ``PKG_CONFIG_LIBDIR``
  188. variables to configure. For convenience and lowering our own
  189. development cost, we provide easier way to configure the build
  190. settings.
  191. ``mingw-config`` script is a configure script wrapper for mingw-w64.
  192. We use it to create official Windows build. This script assumes
  193. following libraries have been built for cross-compile:
  194. * c-ares
  195. * openssl
  196. * expat
  197. * sqlite3
  198. * zlib
  199. * cppunit
  200. Some environment variables can be adjusted to change build settings:
  201. ``HOST``
  202. cross-compile to build programs to run on ``HOST``. It defaults to
  203. ``i686-w64-mingw32``. To build 64bit binary, specify
  204. ``x86_64-w64-mingw32``.
  205. ``PREFIX``
  206. Prefix to the directory where dependent libraries are installed. It
  207. defaults to ``/usr/local/$HOST``. ``-I$PREFIX/include`` will be
  208. added to ``CPPFLAGS``. ``-L$PREFIX/lib`` will be added to
  209. ``LDFLAGS``. ``$PREFIX/lib/pkgconfig`` will be set to
  210. ``PKG_CONFIG_LIBDIR``.
  211. For example, to build 64bit binary do this::
  212. $ HOST=x86_64-w64-mingw32 ./mingw-config
  213. Cross-compiling Android binary
  214. ------------------------------
  215. In this section, we describe how to build Android binary using Android
  216. NDK cross-compiler on Debian Linux.
  217. ``android-config`` script is a configure script wrapper for Android
  218. build. We use it to create official Android build. This script
  219. assumes the following libraries have been built for cross-compile:
  220. * c-ares
  221. * openssl
  222. * expat
  223. When building the above libraries, make sure that disable shared
  224. library and enable only static library. We are going to link those
  225. libraries statically.
  226. We use zlib which comes with Android NDK, so we don't have to build it
  227. by ourselves.
  228. ``android-config`` assumes following points:
  229. * Android NDK toolchain is installed under ``$ANDROID_HOME``. Refer
  230. to "3/ Invoking the compiler (the easy way):" section in Android NDK
  231. ``docs/STANDALONE-TOOLCHAIN.html`` to install custom toolchain.
  232. * The dependant libraries must be installed under
  233. ``$ANDROID_HOME/usr/local``.
  234. Before running ``android-config`` and ``android-make``,
  235. ``$ANDOIRD_HOME`` environment variable must be set to point to the
  236. correct path.
  237. After ``android-config``, run ``android-make`` to compile sources.
  238. Building documentation
  239. ----------------------
  240. `Sphinx <http://sphinx.pocoo.org/>`_ is used to build the
  241. documentation. aria2 man pages will be build when you run ``make`` if
  242. they are not up-to-date. You can also build HTML version of aria2 man
  243. page by ``make html``. The HTML version manual is also available at
  244. `online <http://aria2.sourceforge.net/manual/en/html/>`_ (`Russian
  245. translation <http://aria2.sourceforge.net/manual/ru/html/>`_).
  246. BitTorrrent
  247. -----------
  248. About filename
  249. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  250. The filename of the downloaded file is determined as follows:
  251. single-file mode
  252. If "name" key is present in .torrent file, filename is the value
  253. of "name" key. Otherwise, filename is the basename of .torrent
  254. file appended by ".file". For example, .torrent file is
  255. "test.torrrent", then filename is "test.torrent.file". The
  256. directory to store the downloaded file can be specified by -d
  257. option.
  258. multi-file mode
  259. The complete directory/file structure mentioned in .torrent file
  260. is created. The directory to store the top directory of
  261. downloaded files can be specified by -d option.
  262. Before download starts, a complete directory structure is created if
  263. needed. By default, aria2 opens at most 100 files mentioned in
  264. .torrent file, and directly writes to and reads from these files.
  265. The number of files to open simultaneously can be controlled by
  266. ``--bt-max-open-files`` option.
  267. DHT
  268. ~~~
  269. aria2 supports mainline compatible DHT. By default, the routing table
  270. for IPv4 DHT is saved to ``$HOME/.aria2/dht.dat`` and the routing
  271. table for IPv6 DHT is saved to ``$HOME/.aria2/dht6.dat``. aria2 uses
  272. same port number to listen on for both IPv4 and IPv6 DHT.
  273. Other things should be noted
  274. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  275. * -o option is used to change the filename of .torrent file itself,
  276. not a filename of a file in .torrent file. For this purpose, use
  277. ``--index-out`` option instead.
  278. * The port numbers that aria2 uses by default are 6881-6999 for TCP
  279. and UDP.
  280. * aria2 doesn't configure port-forwarding automatically. Please
  281. configure your router or firewall manually.
  282. * The maximum number of peers is 55. This limit may be exceeded when
  283. download rate is low. This download rate can be adjusted using
  284. ``--bt-request-peer-speed-limit`` option.
  285. * As of release 0.10.0, aria2 stops sending request message after
  286. selective download completes.
  287. Metalink
  288. --------
  289. The current implementation supports HTTP(S)/FTP/BitTorrent. The other
  290. P2P protocols are ignored. Both Metalink4 and Metalink version 3.0
  291. documents are supported.
  292. For checksum verification, md5, sha-1, sha-224, sha-256, sha-384 and
  293. sha-512 are supported. If multiple hash algorithms are provided, aria2
  294. uses stronger one. If whole file checksum verification fails, aria2
  295. doesn't retry the download and just exits with non-zero return code.
  296. The supported user preferences are version, language, location,
  297. protocol and os.
  298. If chunk checksums are provided in Metalink file, aria2 automatically
  299. validates chunks of data during download. This behavior can be turned
  300. off by a command-line option.
  301. If signature is included in a Metalink file, aria2 saves it as a file
  302. after the completion of the download. The filename is download
  303. filename + ".sig". If same file already exists, the signature file is
  304. not saved.
  305. In Metalink4, multi-file torrent could appear in metalink:metaurl
  306. element. Since aria2 cannot download 2 same torrents at the same
  307. time, aria2 groups files in metalink:file element which has same
  308. BitTorrent metaurl and downloads them from a single BitTorrent swarm.
  309. This is basically multi-file torrent download with file selection, so
  310. the adjacent files which is not in Metalink document but shares same
  311. piece with selected file are also created.
  312. If relative URI is specified in metalink:url or metalink:metaurl
  313. element, aria2 uses the URI of Metalink file as base URI to resolve
  314. the relative URI. If relative URI is found in Metalink file which is
  315. read from local disk, aria2 uses the value of ``--metalink-base-uri``
  316. option as base URI. If this option is not specified, the relative URI
  317. will be ignored.
  318. Metalink/HTTP
  319. -------------
  320. The current implementation only uses rel=duplicate links only. aria2
  321. understands Digest header fields and check whether it matches the
  322. digest value from other sources. If it differs, drop connection.
  323. aria2 also uses this digest value to perform checksum verification
  324. after download finished. aria2 recognizes geo value. To tell aria2
  325. which location you prefer, you can use ``--metalink-location`` option.
  326. netrc
  327. -----
  328. netrc support is enabled by default for HTTP(S)/FTP. To disable netrc
  329. support, specify -n command-line option. Your .netrc file should have
  330. correct permissions(600).
  331. WebSocket
  332. ---------
  333. The WebSocket server embedded in aria2 implements the specification
  334. defined in RFC 6455. The supported protocol version is 13.
