  10. ------------
  11. aria2 is a utility for downloading files. The supported protocols are
  12. HTTP(S), FTP, BitTorrent, and Metalink. aria2 can download a file from
  13. multiple sources/protocols and tries to utilize your maximum download
  14. bandwidth. It supports downloading a file from HTTP(S)/FTP and
  15. BitTorrent at the same time, while the data downloaded from
  16. HTTP(S)/FTP is uploaded to the BitTorrent swarm. Using Metalink's
  17. chunk checksums, aria2 automatically validates chunks of data while
  18. downloading a file like BitTorrent.

  122. ------------
  123. In order to build aria2 from the source package, you need following
  124. development packages(package name may vary depending on the
  125. distribution you use):
  126. * libgnutls-dev (Required for HTTPS, BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  127. * nettle-dev (Required for BitTorrent, Checksum support)
  128. * libgmp-dev (Required for BitTorrent)

  144. If you downloaded source code from git repository, you have to run
  145. following command to generate configure script and other files
  146. necessary to build the program::
  147. $ autoreconf -i
  148. Also you need `Sphinx <http://sphinx.pocoo.org/>`_ to build man page.
  149. If you are building aria2 for Mac OS X, take a look at
  150. build_osx_release.sh, which builds OSX universal binary DMG.
  151. The quickest way to build aria2 is first run configure script::
  152. $ ./configure
  153. To build statically linked aria2, use ``ARIA2_STATIC=yes``
  154. command-line option::
  155. $ ./configure ARIA2_STATIC=yes
  156. After configuration is done, run ``make`` to compile the program::
  157. $ make
  158. See `Cross-compiling Windows binary`_ to create Windows binary. See
  159. `Cross-compiling Android binary`_ to create Android binary.
  160. The configure script checks available libraries and enables the features
  161. as much as possible because all the features are enabled by default.
  162. Since 1.1.0, aria2 checks the certificate of HTTPS servers by default.
  163. If you build with OpenSSL or the recent version of GnuTLS which has
  164. ``gnutls_certificate_set_x509_system_trust()`` function and the
  165. library is properly configured to locate the system-wide CA
  166. certificates store, aria2 will automatically load those certificates
  167. at the startup. If it is not the case, I recommend to supply the path
  168. to the CA bundle file. For example, in Debian the path to CA bundle
  169. file is '/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt' (in ca-certificates
  170. package). This may vary depending on your distribution. You can give
  171. it to configure script using ``--with-ca-bundle option``::
  172. $ ./configure --with-ca-bundle='/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt'
  173. $ make
  174. Without ``--with-ca-bundle`` option, you will encounter the error when
  175. accessing HTTPS servers because the certificate cannot be verified
  176. without CA bundle. In such case, you can specify the CA bundle file
  177. using aria2's ``--ca-certificate`` option. If you don't have CA bundle
  178. file installed, then the last resort is disable the certificate
  179. validation using ``--check-certificate=false``.
  180. By default, bash_completion file named ``aria2c`` is installed to the
  181. directory ``$prefix/share/doc/aria2/bash_completion``. To change the
  182. install directory of the file, use ``--with-bashcompletiondir``
  183. option.
  184. The executable is 'aria2c' in src directory.
  185. aria2 uses CppUnit for automated unit testing. To run the unit test::
  186. $ make check
  187. Cross-compiling Windows binary
  188. ------------------------------
  189. In this section, we describe how to build Windows binary using
  190. mingw-w64 cross-compiler on Debian Linux.
  191. Basically, after compiling and installing depended libraries, you can
  192. do cross-compile just passing appropriate ``--host`` option and
  193. specifying ``CPPFLAGS``, ``LDFLAGS`` and ``PKG_CONFIG_LIBDIR``
  194. variables to configure. For convenience and lowering our own
  195. development cost, we provide easier way to configure the build
  196. settings.
  197. ``mingw-config`` script is a configure script wrapper for mingw-w64.
  198. We use it to create official Windows build. This script assumes
  199. following libraries have been built for cross-compile:
  200. * c-ares
  201. * openssl
  202. * expat
  203. * sqlite3
  204. * zlib
  205. * cppunit
  206. Some environment variables can be adjusted to change build settings:
  207. ``HOST``
  208. cross-compile to build programs to run on ``HOST``. It defaults to
  209. ``i686-w64-mingw32``. To build 64bit binary, specify
  210. ``x86_64-w64-mingw32``.
  211. ``PREFIX``
  212. Prefix to the directory where dependent libraries are installed. It
  213. defaults to ``/usr/local/$HOST``. ``-I$PREFIX/include`` will be
  214. added to ``CPPFLAGS``. ``-L$PREFIX/lib`` will be added to
  215. ``LDFLAGS``. ``$PREFIX/lib/pkgconfig`` will be set to
  216. ``PKG_CONFIG_LIBDIR``.
  217. For example, to build 64bit binary do this::
  218. $ HOST=x86_64-w64-mingw32 ./mingw-config
  219. Cross-compiling Android binary
  220. ------------------------------
  221. In this section, we describe how to build Android binary using Android
  222. NDK cross-compiler on Debian Linux.
  223. ``android-config`` script is a configure script wrapper for Android
  224. build. We use it to create official Android build. This script
  225. assumes the following libraries have been built for cross-compile:
  226. * c-ares
  227. * openssl
  228. * expat
  229. When building the above libraries, make sure that disable shared
  230. library and enable only static library. We are going to link those
  231. libraries statically.
  232. We use zlib which comes with Android NDK, so we don't have to build it
  233. by ourselves.
  234. ``android-config`` assumes the existence of ``$ANDROID_HOME``
  235. environment variable which must fulfill the following conditions:
  236. * Android NDK toolchain is installed under
  237. ``$ANDROID_HOME/toolchain``. Refer to "3/ Invoking the compiler
  238. (the easy way):" section in Android NDK
  239. ``docs/STANDALONE-TOOLCHAIN.html`` to install custom toolchain.
  240. For example, to install toolchain under ``$ANDROID_HOME/toolchain``,
  241. do this::
  242. $NDK/build/tools/make-standalone-toolchain.sh --platform=android-9 --install-dir=$ANDROID_HOME/toolchain
  243. * The dependant libraries must be installed under
  244. ``$ANDROID_HOME/usr/local``.
  245. Before running ``android-config`` and ``android-make``,
  246. ``$ANDOIRD_HOME`` environment variable must be set to point to the
  247. correct path.
  248. After ``android-config``, run ``android-make`` to compile sources.
  249. Building documentation
  250. ----------------------
  251. `Sphinx <http://sphinx.pocoo.org/>`_ is used to build the
  252. documentation. aria2 man pages will be build when you run ``make`` if
  253. they are not up-to-date. You can also build HTML version of aria2 man
  254. page by ``make html``. The HTML version manual is also available at

  259. BitTorrrent
  260. -----------
  261. About filename
  262. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  263. The filename of the downloaded file is determined as follows:
  264. single-file mode
  265. If "name" key is present in .torrent file, filename is the value
  266. of "name" key. Otherwise, filename is the basename of .torrent
  267. file appended by ".file". For example, .torrent file is
  268. "test.torrrent", then filename is "test.torrent.file". The
  269. directory to store the downloaded file can be specified by -d
  270. option.
  271. multi-file mode
  272. The complete directory/file structure mentioned in .torrent file
  273. is created. The directory to store the top directory of
  274. downloaded files can be specified by -d option.
  275. Before download starts, a complete directory structure is created if
  276. needed. By default, aria2 opens at most 100 files mentioned in
  277. .torrent file, and directly writes to and reads from these files.
  278. The number of files to open simultaneously can be controlled by
  279. ``--bt-max-open-files`` option.
  280. DHT
  281. ~~~
  282. aria2 supports mainline compatible DHT. By default, the routing table
  283. for IPv4 DHT is saved to ``$HOME/.aria2/dht.dat`` and the routing
  284. table for IPv6 DHT is saved to ``$HOME/.aria2/dht6.dat``. aria2 uses
  285. same port number to listen on for both IPv4 and IPv6 DHT.
  286. UDP tracker
  287. ~~~~~~~~~~~
  288. UDP tracker support is enabled when IPv4 DHT is enabled. The port
  289. number of UDP tracker is shared with DHT. Use ``--dht-listen-port``
  290. option to change the port number.
  291. Other things should be noted
  292. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  293. * -o option is used to change the filename of .torrent file itself,
  294. not a filename of a file in .torrent file. For this purpose, use
  295. ``--index-out`` option instead.
  296. * The port numbers that aria2 uses by default are 6881-6999 for TCP
  297. and UDP.
  298. * aria2 doesn't configure port-forwarding automatically. Please
  299. configure your router or firewall manually.
  300. * The maximum number of peers is 55. This limit may be exceeded when
  301. download rate is low. This download rate can be adjusted using
  302. ``--bt-request-peer-speed-limit`` option.
  303. * As of release 0.10.0, aria2 stops sending request message after
  304. selective download completes.
  305. Metalink
  306. --------
  307. The current implementation supports HTTP(S)/FTP/BitTorrent. The other
  308. P2P protocols are ignored. Both Metalink4 and Metalink version 3.0
  309. documents are supported.
  310. For checksum verification, md5, sha-1, sha-224, sha-256, sha-384 and
  311. sha-512 are supported. If multiple hash algorithms are provided, aria2
  312. uses stronger one. If whole file checksum verification fails, aria2
  313. doesn't retry the download and just exits with non-zero return code.
  314. The supported user preferences are version, language, location,
  315. protocol and os.
  316. If chunk checksums are provided in Metalink file, aria2 automatically
  317. validates chunks of data during download. This behavior can be turned
  318. off by a command-line option.
  319. If signature is included in a Metalink file, aria2 saves it as a file
  320. after the completion of the download. The filename is download
  321. filename + ".sig". If same file already exists, the signature file is
  322. not saved.
  323. In Metalink4, multi-file torrent could appear in metalink:metaurl
  324. element. Since aria2 cannot download 2 same torrents at the same
  325. time, aria2 groups files in metalink:file element which has same
  326. BitTorrent metaurl and downloads them from a single BitTorrent swarm.
  327. This is basically multi-file torrent download with file selection, so
  328. the adjacent files which is not in Metalink document but shares same
  329. piece with selected file are also created.
  330. If relative URI is specified in metalink:url or metalink:metaurl
  331. element, aria2 uses the URI of Metalink file as base URI to resolve
  332. the relative URI. If relative URI is found in Metalink file which is
  333. read from local disk, aria2 uses the value of ``--metalink-base-uri``
  334. option as base URI. If this option is not specified, the relative URI
  335. will be ignored.
  336. Metalink/HTTP
  337. -------------
  338. The current implementation only uses rel=duplicate links only. aria2
  339. understands Digest header fields and check whether it matches the
  340. digest value from other sources. If it differs, drop connection.
  341. aria2 also uses this digest value to perform checksum verification
  342. after download finished. aria2 recognizes geo value. To tell aria2
  343. which location you prefer, you can use ``--metalink-location`` option.
  344. netrc
  345. -----
  346. netrc support is enabled by default for HTTP(S)/FTP. To disable netrc
  347. support, specify -n command-line option. Your .netrc file should have
  348. correct permissions(600).
  349. WebSocket
  350. ---------
  351. The WebSocket server embedded in aria2 implements the specification
  352. defined in RFC 6455. The supported protocol version is 13.
